St. Louis' contributions to modern music are many. Musical legends such as Scott Joplin, Chuck Berry, Johnnie Johnson, and Tina Turner effected striking changes in the course of modern American music. Their influences are heard the world over, even still.
Today, artists such as Henry Townsend, Bennie Smith, and Dave Black are keeping these older influences alive... and at home in St. Louis.
But heritage is not just a look at our past. It is an ever evolving story. More recently, St. Louis bands and artists such as Nelly,
Robynn Ragland, Chingy,
Stir and others, have been recognized for breaking new ground and some have met with major label success.
Many other bands have yet to be discovered. Many new art forms have yet to be constructed. If the past one hundred years is any indication of the future, the midwest region, and St. Louis in particular will continue to be fertile ground for talented and innovative musicianship.
